Welcome to the "Painting to Proficiency" wiki

This wikispace is an outgrowth of my participation in a 2011 National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar entitled "Authors in the Prado: Spanish Painting and the Literature it Inspired." The premise of the seminar was to read six dramas and novels which were all inspired by or connected to famous works of art by artists including Velázquez, Goya, and Picasso. If art could be an inspiration to authors such as Antonio Buero-Vallejo, Rafael Albertí, and Fernando Arrabal, among others, then it makes sense for these and other works of art to become inspiration for my own students in their presentational writing as well.

The purpose of the wiki is twofold. First to serve as an curricular resource where I can house links to specific works of art correlated to my own curricular units and also links to museums throughout the Spanish-speaking world where resources can be located with the click of a mouse. Second, to serve as an instructional tool for teachers to learn more about proficiency itself and how to create their own writing prompts as they being to incorporate art in a way that encourages students to produce the language they are learning.

As with many of my projects, this is a work in progress and the wiki continues to grow as I find additional materials, revise existing materials and reflect on how the process works in my own program and in those of others. The wiki is designed to provide basic information about language proficiency and help you begin to use art in a more integrated fashion and start writing your own prompts.

Navigating the Wiki

The wiki contains several primary pages that lead to additional resources and provide teachers with information about how I´ve gone about incorporating works of art into the curriculum and creating presentational writing prompts. You can return to this home page from anywhere within the wiki by simply clicking on the "Painting to Proficiency" logo in the upper left corner of the page. In the sidebar, you can also access
